Notes for Parents/Caregivers about Matilda and the Spacer

'Matilda and the Spacer' is a photographic role-modeling story book for pre-schoolers with asthma. It was developed in response to an identified need for a resource to help with cooperation issues using asthma medications in the pre-school age group. Development was based on current literature and research on successful and appropriate encouragement of cooperation in this age group, with regard to cognitive development.

The story is designed to be read to the pre-schooler by the parent/caregiver, adding in discussion about the similarities between Matilda and the child being read to. Points to elaborate on are:

  • The importance of stopping to rest rather than reaching for reliever medication straight away.
  • The correct use of the spacer.
  • Resting after taking medication to give it chance to work.
  • Acknowledging that the child may not like taking their medication.
  • Emphasising that asthma does not have to stop the child taking part in normal activities.

'Matilda and the Spacer' does not cover preventative treatment, and is not meant to be a complete resource for asthma management.
