About COPD

COPD stands for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It is a broad term that covers conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. With COPD the lung tissue has become damaged and the airways and air sacs in the lungs do not work properly to move air in and out of the lungs effectively. COPD is a progressive lung condition that can not be reversed but the rate of progression can be slowed and quality of life can be improved by managing the disease.

COPD causes shortness of breath of varying severity, a cough (often with phlegm) and sometimes a wheeze. The shortness of breath will tend to impact on day-to-day activities but there are ways to minimise this impact.

Smoking is the main cause of COPD in 85% of people with the disease. The earlier a person stops smoking, the greater their chance of avoiding COPD. People that already have COPD still benefit from stopping smoking as each cigarette will cause further lung damage. Asthma Canterbury can help with stopping smoking and there are a number of other agencies that can also assist.

Being well informed about COPD can help a person manage the condition better and maintain their quality of life. Exercise, good nutrition and a positive attitude can all help. The breathlessness that comes with COPD can sometimes result in social isolation and depression. There are supports in the community that can help strengthen a person physically, emotionally and socially to continue living a full life with COPD. Asthma Canterbury can help with information and contacts.
