Points to consider before buying a nebuliser
- Are you using a spacer for your inhalers? For the aerosol type of inhaler, a spacer makes a big difference to how much medication you get and can be as effective as a nebuliser.
- How often do you need to use a nebuliser when you are at your worst? If you use it more than three times a day when you are unwell, or if you have COPD, we recommend choosing a more robust model of nebuliser that does not require a long cool down time between uses.
- Check with your doctor before buying a nebuliser as he/she must be willing to prescribe the medication needed for its use.
Costs
- Apart from the initial outlay for the purchase of the nebuliser, there are ongoing costs for the machine maintenance and the 'consumables'.
- Annual servicing of the nebuliser is recommended. The approximate cost is $80-$100. Asthma Canterbury does not service nebulisers.
- The giving set (medicine bowl, mouthpiece and tubing) needs replacing every 6 weeks to 3 months depending on amount of use. The giving sets cost $10 each.
- The nebuliser filter should be replaced six monthly. Costs vary according to brand.
Payments need to be made by cash or cheque, as we do not have eft-pos or credit card facilities.
