Allergy Bedding

House dust mites are a common trigger for asthma. House dust mites (HDM) are microscopic creatures that share our environment and feed on our shed skin flakes. They particularly favour the warm, humid conditions provided by our bedding and carpets.

Some people are allergic to the faecal droppings of the dust mite and this can trigger their asthma. Hot washing of bedding (>55C) will kill dust mites but this is not possible with mattresses and pillows.

Barrier covers are made from breathable fabric (cotton or polycotton) with a very tight weave that prevents the dust mite droppings escaping to trigger allergy. The covers also prevent skin flakes from reaching the dust mites thereby depriving them of their food source. The covers completely enclose the mattress or pillow. They are considered to be one of the most effective ways of managing dust mite allergy.

If you are unsure whether you are allergic to house dust mite, ask your doctor if you can be referred for a skin prick allergy test. This is a simple, low-cost test that can help identify specific allergies.
